Day 42 of 100 Days of Making Comics

1/23/2021 -  Day [the answer is 42]: 49 minutes today went into working on a model sheet for the character in Endstar Arrival with a cybernetic beard. To think of it, some undetermined quantity of time was intermittently spent writing notes today that in many cases corresponded directly to the Endstar Arrival project as well.

Progress Screenshot: [It's Octo-Beard! Although he's convinced that he conveys a more spider-like aesthetic, in spite of what everyone around him seem to think. We just don't buy it Octo-Beard, sorry. The actual name that he's going by now is Dr. Spyder. Of course, that's just a cover.]

Inspiration from his childhood pet tarantula, and an entire pile of broken technology from his parent's basement sent him down a path of curiosity in the wild realm of nature and technology. From there, he repaired an ancient aircraft that he found while on a trip to survey the invertebrates of Beta-Atlantis. Unfortunately, the aircraft was quickly confiscated by a secret agency dedicated to keeping ancient weapons out of the public eye and reach. However, his persistence, curiosity driven aptitude, and intense work ethic eventually earned him a position in the agency, where he could finally unravel many secrets and mysteries of the world that were classified shortly after being unearthed.

Soon after his acceptance, disagreements in the agency gave rise to factions that each had their own goals for the classified technology that they were accumulating. Questions now rise, regarding whether or not each faction is working toward the right goal, because many of them certainly aren't working together.

What kinds of disagreements fractured the agency into factions? Where is Beta-Atlantis? What is Dr Spyder's goal!? Well, maybe stick around and find out as this comic story project comes together.

And what, a Video!?:

  Other Notes:

  • Today's random interesting animal(s):

In the last post I introduced one of my favorite Swallowtail butterflies. This time, I'll introduce swallowtail moths, which make up the family Uraniidae. As a family, Uraniidae may as well contain some of the most impressive and beautiful “butterfly-like” moths known. It’s a pretty big moth family, with 90 genera and somewhere around 700 species, so I’ll narrow this blog entry down to my top two genera:

    • The genus Urania [who's genus name means "of heaven" or "the Heavenly one"], and the genus Chrysiridia which contains the strikingly marked iridescent sunset moths.

    • If I really had to choose a favorite from both genera based upon pattern alone, I would go with the East African sunset moth (Chrysiridia croesus), and the green-banded urania (Urania leilus). Both of species mentioned are diurnal, which is noteworthy because nocturnal moths belonging to the family Uraniidae tend to be smaller and paler than the diurnal species.

    • Yeah, I totally did just spend the last 3 hours researching moths. [as well as tapirs and tarsiers, which are all rather different.]

  • TOOLS USED for the art in this post: Autodesk sketchbook on the ipad pro.

Thanks for reading! :)

  1. Haha love the Hitchhiker's Guide reference and love that you called him Octo-Beard aka Dr.Spyder
    Very Awesome!
Now i know more about him, he reminds me of 2 characters from the Captain Canuck comic series by Richard Comely, not to be confused for Grey Canuck by Frank Salazar

I'll save that for another time!

If you crossbreed a Sunset Moth with a Urania Moth do you get a Heavenly Sunset Moth?

    1. Hahaha nice! I was kinda quoting you, with the name "Octo-Beard" since that's what you sprung to calling him first. As for the moths, a Heavenly Sunset Moth would be cool. That's a good question though, as I'm not so sure it would work. Even though they belong to the family Uraniidae, they both belong to separate genera. That's the short answer at least. I kinda want to address this in my next post, cause speciation can get interesting and weird.

    2. Lol yeah, it reminded me of Dr. Octopus so that's what popped in my head.
I'll read up on your next post about the moths.
